How To Prepare For An Echocardiogram
Are you about to get your first echocardiogram? If you are, then you may be wondering how you can prepare. It can be a bit anxiety-inducing if you don't know exactly how to go about preparing and what to expect during the test. Fortunately, preparing for the test and even getting through the experience does not have to be difficult. All you have to do is make sure that you are doing a few simple things. Take a look at how you can prepare for an echocardiogram.
Your Health
You need to tell your doctor if you have problems with swallowing or if you have issues with sleep. You should also tell your doctor about any problems you may have with your esophagus. If you are currently on any medications for anxiety issues or chronic pain this is something you should also discuss. This way your doctor can know if you are physically prepared for the echocardiogram.
Day of the Test
Some testers will not be allowed to eat or drink anything several hours before the echocardiogram. Your doctor will tell you if you are one of these people. If so, he will give you specific instructions about eating and drinking before your test.
Make sure that you are wearing comfortable clothes on the day of the test. This will ensure that you are comfortable while waiting and you'll be able to change quickly if necessary. You will be given a hospital gown to put on when you remove your shirt.
The Testing Process
You need to partially remove your clothing so that electrodes can be placed on your chest to measure your heart's electrical activity. Your doctor will want to monitor your blood pressure throughout the whole session. An oximeter will also be used to measure your pulse.
One type of echocardiogram involves an endoscope going in your mouth. It is long and thin and equipped to take pictures of your heart. It will go down your throat and into your esophagus behind your heart. Once the pictures have been taken, the tube will be removed and you'll be able to go home.
The most uncomfortable part of the entire testing process is the insertion of the tube. However, while this may cause some discomfort it is not painful. Things will go quickly and before you know it the procedure will be over and you will be able to continue with your day.
