Before Botox: A Guide For First-Time Patients

If you're about to get Botox injections for the first time, you might be a little worried about what might happen after the injections. This is understandable. Of course, you want good results and no side effects! It may be more productive, however, to focus on what happens before your injections. That's something you have complete control over, after all. Here are some things to do and ways to prepare.

1. Research the place where you plan on getting your injections.

Botox should only be administered by a licensed medical professional. Check to make sure the office where you're having your injections performed is legitimate, insured, and licensed.

2. Ask the practitioner about any medications you are taking.

There are a number of medications that can increase your risk of side effects after Botox. For example, blood thinners can cause you to bleed more extensively after your injections, which can lead to bruising. Call the practitioner who will be giving you the Botox injections, and give them a complete list of all medications and supplements you are taking. Ask which ones you need to terminate prior to Botox, and also how long before the injections you need to quit.

3. Purchase some soft ice packs.

Applying some ice to your face after Botox can help alleviate the soreness that is so common in the first one or two days after treatment. But holding large chunks of ice against your face is hard! Look instead for some soft, flexible ice packs that you can gently place against your face a few minutes at a time. Sporting goods stores often sell these as they are popular with injured athletes.

4. Take a day off if you are worried about people knowing.

There is no medical reason why you can't go straight back to work after Botox. Some people have the injections done during their mid-day lunch break. However, if you are worried about people noticing that you had Botox, you may want to schedule a day off. Patients often look a little overly puffy and unnatural the first day after Botox. After that, the swelling will dissipate and you will look a lot more natural.

If you follow the tips above, you will be very well prepared for your Botox injections. Talk to your doctor for more information.
