You Have Insomnia
If you either can't fall asleep when you first go to bed, or you wake up too soon in the middle of the night and then can't fall back asleep, you have a problem with insomnia. There are, of course, over the counter drugs you can take to help you fall asleep, but you don't want to be dependent on this for the rest of your life. If you have chronic insomnia, there could be something going on inside your brain that is causing the issue. A sleep center can monitor your entire body including your brain when you try to fall asleep and then will continue to monitor what happens once you actually do.
You Have a Condition That Makes You Uncomfortable
You could still have a sleep disorder even if you typically fall asleep with no problem. One common problem is sleep apnea, where your airways become obstructed and are not allowing you to breathe in and out with ease. Sleep apnea almost always leads to loud snoring.
Another common sleeping disorder is restless leg syndrome. Your legs might move while you are in bed even though you are not consciously trying to move them. This could wake you up in the middle of the night, keep you awake afterwards, or make the person next to you uncomfortable.
You Owe It to Your Partner or Spouse
Speaking of the person lying next to you, going to a sleep center to finally fix your problem may help your partner or spouse get a better night of sleep as well. Most people can't sleep with someone tossing and turning, snoring or kicking their legs right next to them.
