Ways To Take Care Of Yourself When You’re Expecting

When you are pregnant, your healthcare becomes not just about you but also about the baby growing inside of you. You may find yourself wondering what you should do or what changes you should make to take this pregnancy and your coming child into account in your daily life and healthcare. Get to know some of the ways that you should take care of yourself when you are expecting. Then, you can be sure you take the right steps for you and your baby going forward.

See a Healthcare Professional

Even if you plan to have a natural childbirth, a home birth, or any other unconventional birth situation, you should still take the time to see a healthcare professional throughout your pregnancy. Getting an ultrasound, for example, is an important step to take and will help determine the viability and health of the fetus.

Your doctor will also run blood work and give you a thorough check-up when you go see them. These visits can help to diagnose issues like gestational diabetes or hypertension that could affect not only your health but also the health of your baby.

Know What Not to Eat

There are many foods that you should not eat or you should eat in extremely small quantities when you are pregnant. Some of these include:

  • Tuna and other high-mercury fish
  • Hollandaise sauce or other foods with raw eggs
  • Raw fish or meat
  • Caffeinated beverages
  • Soft cheeses
  • Hot dogs
  • Cold cuts and deli meat

Avoiding these foods will help to prevent you from getting food-borne illnesses like listeria and will also help to protect the health of your child. Mercury, for example, can have severe negative effects on a growing fetus.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

Pregnancy and starting a family (or expanding a family) is a wonderful time. It can also be a stressful time. And the hormonal changes in your body do not always help with that.

Be sure that you take good care of your mental health when you are pregnant as well. Consider seeing a counselor or therapist to help you through this time in your life. It can be great to have someone impartial to talk to when times get tough or even when you are feeling good and happy about things. Your counselor can help you come up with strategies to maintain and improve your mental health through pregnancy and beyond.

Now that you know a few ways to take care of yourself when you are expecting, you can give them a try as soon as possible. Take charge of your prenatal health care
